Gaga is never going to stop “copying” Madonna because there will always be someone around to find something Madonna did ten years ago to compare Gaga to. Gaga’s perfume ad is a great example of Gaga being creative. The Gulliver’s Travels reference is obvious, but because Madonna laid down on a floor in 1994, the ad is nothing other than a “Madonna retread”. The thing about all of the “copying” bullshit is that when you have to reach back more than a decade to find something to compare Gaga to, that means that Gaga is doing a pretty good job at being different when the context of “being different” is applied to this generation. If you look at every other popstar right now, including what Madonna is currently doing, there’s nothing new happening in a generational sense, and you only have to reach back a couple of years to find where the influence is coming from. You have Katy and Nicki doing what Gaga did two years ago, Madonna doing what everyone else is doing because she’s desperately trying to hold onto her youth, Rihanna doing nothing, and Ke$ha continuing to work with the same people who will do nothing but put out the same sound.
Let’s all just gang up on the one popstar actually trying to think outside of the box because we don’t like when people don’t conform to our simpleton mindset.
